What are Immunodeficiencies?

Immunodeficiencies, also known as immunological disorders or primary immunodeficiency diseases are a group of conditions characterized by a weakened or dysfunctional immune system. The immune system plays a critical role in defending the body against infections, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and other harmful pathogens.

The Different Types of Immunodeficiencies

B-Cell Disorders

B Cell disorders are a group of medical conditions that primarily affect the function development or regulation of B lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell responsible for producing antibodies and participating in the immune response. Some common B cell disorders include:

Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID): CVID is one of the most prevalent immunodeficiency. It is characterized by low levels of antibodies, IgG, IgA in particular.

X-Linked Agammaglobulinemia (XLA): XLA is a rare genetic disorder that affects males. It results in a lack of B cells and the inability to product antibodies.

T-Cell Disorders

T-cell disorders, or T-cell immunodeficiencies are a group of medical conditions that affect the function, development, or regulation of T lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell crucial for the immune system’s cellular response. Some common T cell disorders include:

Chronic Mucocutaneous Candidasis (CMC): CMC is characterize by persistent and recurrent fungal infections, particularly with Candida species.

Thymic-Aplasia: is a congential disorder characterized by the underdevelopment or absence of the thymus gland and a critical organ for the development and maturation of T lymphocytes (T cells).
