- Blood-sucking insects that prefer to live on clothing
- Cause intense pruritis, pink macules and papules commonly in intertriginous (where two skin areas touch each other) regions
- Crabs (in pubic area) bites can cause bites that turn blue due to anticoagulant in their saliva
- Can transmit Rickettsia prowazekii (typhus), Borrelia recurrentis (relapsing fever), Bartonella quintana (trench fever)
- Tx: Topic Permethrin (first line)
- Tx: Body lice -> wash sheets, clothes and body (treatment usually not needed)
- Tx: Malathion
- Malathion is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor
- Tx: Ivermectin lotion
- Tx: Nit combing
- Other tx: Lindane
- Lindane blocks GABA channels -> neurotoxicity
- Children with head lice can be treated at home without interrupting school
